Position Summary

Join us as our new Assistant Application Scientist

This position works under limited supervision and is responsible for assisting in the Research and Development activities of probiotic powder formulations for encapsulation, powder filling and tableting applications. It works directly with Product Development and Sales functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Executing Product Development projects in a timely manner; interacting with scientists internally and other departments as needed in defining specific parameters for projects.
  • Writing experimental plans and performing testing per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Product Development Laboratory, entering results into applicable protocol or database.
  • Helping identify dietary ingredients and processes to improve stability, manufacturing efficiencies, and product costs for probiotic-based dietary supplements.
  • Coordinating the stability program including sample set‑up, inventory, timely testing of samples in accordance with the protocol and reporting of the results.
  • Performing solution preparation for a variety of test methods.
  • Maintaining complete and accurate laboratory records.
  • Coordinating and executing scale‑up processing trials with the Operations department.
  • Collaborating with Quality Control and Quality Assurance to create specifications for raw materials and all dietary supplement products.
  • Providing R&D expertise during meetings both internally and externally.
  • Performing solution and media preparation as needed.
  • Generating lab samples for customer evaluation as needed.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned; reporting to work on time and working overtime as required.
Qualifications
  • General understanding of probiotic dietary supplement applications and processing.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • English language proficiency (read, write, speak) is required.
  • Ability to read, collect data, analyze, and interpret technical information.
  • Ability to write and present reports and technical papers.
  • Comfortable with mathematical concepts such as percents, ppm, and basic algebraic equations.
  • Logical and scientific thinking applied to a wide range of problems.
  • Experience operating standard laboratory equipment and instrumentation (e.g., pipettes, vortexers, powder property testing equipment).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in a science‑related field with 0 to 3 years of relevant laboratory experience.

Location: Wausau, WI (On‑Site)

Expected salary range: $26 an hour

Working Conditions

The working environment is generally favorable and consists of a laboratory and office environment. Lighting, temperature and noise levels are adequate. Personal protective equipment is required while in the laboratory; this includes a lab coat, hair/beard net, safety glasses, respirator and gloves.

Physical Demands

Frequent standing, walking, talking and hearing. Regularly required to lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 25 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of hands to handle objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required include vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and chemicals is possible.
