Police Officer
Under general supervision, provides support in a variety of capacities to all areas of the police department; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned. The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.
Responsibilities- Receive and document offense reports, incident reports, and other related reports from walk‑in complainants
- Assume duties and responsibilities associated with the care, custody, storage, and daily maintenance of all police department property and evidence
- Responsible for assisting with the daily and periodic maintenance (repairs) of the police department vehicles, buildings, and facility
- Act in conjunction with other personnel to maintain all supplies and equipment belonging to the department, including minor repairs, inventory, and issuance of supplies and equipment
- May assist in the field by supplementing police presence at special events or in specified geographic areas
- Take fingerprints for citizens as needed
- Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing, photocopying, etc. as required
- Actively seeks to dispose of Municipal Court warrants through telephone contact with violators
- Assists other departmental employees as needed, functions as a team member, and interacts appropriately with the general public
- Performs other duties as assigned
- General elements needed to satisfy prosecution of criminal offenses
- Rules and laws about evidence storage
- Department policies and procedures
- Knowledge of police department practices, policies, and procedures for assigned areas
- Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software to maintain databases, files, and records
- Knowledge of general office equipment and operational practices and procedures
- Operate a variety of modern office equipment safely and effectively
- Operate a two‑way radio
- Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations
- Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Any combination of relevant education, experience, certifications, or licenses may qualify.
Education, Training, and Experience- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Any previous duties performed that would normally be associated with the basic function of a police officer
- A valid State driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment

Physical DemandsMaintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods; general manual dexterity; and carrying up to 75 pounds occasionally. The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear; use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls;
reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information, and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work; deals with multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers, the public, and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.
Work EnvironmentExposure to extreme heat, cold, and humidity while working outdoors; temperature swings from indoors to outdoors; extreme noise of traffic, sirens, crowds, and firearms; electrical hazards of traffic accidents and power lines; explosive hazards of fireworks, traffic collisions, hazards of industrial accidents, and traffic collisions; fumes, odors, dust of drug labs, industrial accidents, traffic collisions, and fires; toxic substances of fires and traffic collisions.
Work may be performed indoors, outdoors, in offices, buildings, and automobiles. Work hours may consistently require overtime, occasional holidays, and some weekends.
