Maximum: $93,138

Work Hours and Travel

Full-time, 40 hours per week, onsite. Travel is expected 5% of the time.

Responsibilities – Transportation Specialist I
  • Coordinate design work among TxDOT entities, consultants, and contractors.
  • Provide technical assistance in resolving construction problems.
  • Evaluate and analyze design issues.
  • Perform additional assigned duties.
Responsibilities – Transportation Specialist II
  • Assist with project design calculations and sketches.
  • Develop site layouts using engineering workstations and software.
  • Inspect roadways and evaluate conditions.
Responsibilities – Transportation Specialist III and IV
  • Develop site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software.
  • Inspect roadways and evaluate conditions.
  • Assists in overseeing design work among TxDOT entities, consultants, and contractors.
  • Prioritize and schedule projects.
  • Implement proper traffic control procedures and safety precautions at construction sites.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise and coordination in maintenance operations.
  • May serve as a lead worker and related tasks.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline. Substitute education for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Experience:
    • I – 2 years in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, and bridge inspection.
    • II – 4 years in the same areas.
    • III – 5 years in the same areas.
    • IV – 5 years in the same areas.
  • Valid driver’s license. Driving a state vehicle is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preparation, review, processing, and compliance of plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Pavement design and management processes.
  • Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Preventive maintenance methods and procedures.
  • Application of engineering principles and methods.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and maps.
  • Planning, coordinating, and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility.
  • Use of computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Pre‑employment physical exam required.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; random drug testing applies.
  • Bridge Inspection:
    Must have completed a comprehensive training course within 1 year of hire.
