JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher in providing direct and indirect services to students with disabilities as assigned. The employee provides one-on-one assistance with academics and behavioral problems, and may lead small group activities. The EC Teacher Assistant helps reinforce instruction taught in the classroom, may work with students individually, answer questions or grade assignments, and may supervise students outside of the classroom on the playground, during bathroom breaks, at lunch, and on field trips.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide teacher-directed instruction to individual or small groups of students with disabilities.
- Participate in training and complete duties required for individual students with disabilities (e.g., assistance with transfers, toileting support, diaper changes, and implementation of modifications and accommodations on IEPs).
- Provide non-instructional support to the classroom teacher (snack, lunch, bulletin boards, and other tasks).
- Participate in training and implement skills in the use of assistive technology and other educational devices.
- Supervise students to provide academic support and enforce school rules in various settings (small group, whole group, one-on-one).
- Communicate effectively in oral and written forms with students, teachers, staff, and administrators.
- Serve as a positive role model in attitude, actions, speech, and dress.
- Assist with classroom activities (reading, storytelling, calendar, and related tasks).
- Perform clerical duties to support instructional delivery and classroom operations.
- Prepare notes, reports, and data collection information to keep stakeholders advised of student performance.
- Provide assistance to individual children in need of special attention.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must meet Highly Qualified standards for paraprofessionals
- Associate’s Degree or a minimum of 48 college credits or verified HQ status from another source (e.g., Work Keys Occupational Profile Assessment)
- Paraprofessional Praxis Test and/or Paraprofessional Certification
- Bachelor's degree in special education or a related field (preferred)

- Demonstrates preparation and skill in working with students and co-workers from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
- Knowledge of codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
- Ability to monitor the safety and well-being of students, especially during inclusive activities.
- Ability to interpret written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents; ability to perform essential job functions.
- Proficiency with applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment, using software applications, and maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to perform multiple, complex tasks and to upgrade skills as needed.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Strength:
Sedentary/Medium; ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs frequently. - Physical Demands:
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and fine motor activities; hearing and speaking for communication; vision for reading materials and screens. - Environment:
Classrooms and varying temperatures; exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions; noise levels from moderate to loud.
