Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, the Security Officer maintains a secure and orderly environment and protects the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, ensuring the safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. Armed security officers must obtain Public Act 330 certification, be able to arrest for misdemeanors, and complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.
EssentialFunctions
- Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or bike as assigned); unlock doors and provide motor assistance; observe suspicious activities and prevent security violations.
- Accept and perform various duties at assigned post; assist patients, visitors, and employees; enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies.
- Assist in the Security Operations Center monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
- Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies and compliance issues.
- Complete assigned or self‑generated reports or logs daily on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log calls and lost articles; send reports to managers and executives.
- Investigate suspected crimes on the hospital grounds and off‑site locations; prepare reports; cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
- Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors or patients as directed or when necessary for safety.
- Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas; prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Use proactive non‑violent de‑escalation techniques to neutralize potentially volatile situations involving patients, staff and visitors.
- Assist nursing staff with physical management/ restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- Use defensive tactics and the approved MCOLES force continuum as necessary to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients and visitors.
- Possess, carry and utilize electronic weapons, tasers and other weapons in accordance with Corewell Health policy.
- Provide CPR/first aid during medical emergencies until specialist staff arrive.
- Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures and maintain order in the decontamination area.
- Report and respond to fire or safety hazards; inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with scheduled fire, disaster and other emergency drills.
- Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
At locations where PA 330 is in place, all the above duties plus:
- Use police authority to arrest for both felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
- Use citation and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two to three years’ law‑enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police.
- The ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or other dangerous incidents.
- Electrical Control Device (ECD) use – requires approval by the Director; carry Pistol License (CPL) and completion of specialized Taser Training Course.
- Driver’s license – State of Michigan; obtained upon hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association, 90‑day requirement.
- AED certification – applicant’s current status, 90‑day requirement.
- First Aid – American Heart Association, 90‑day requirement.
- Graduation from a state‑regulated Police Academy. Other related experience in crowd control and security may also be considered.
