Overview
Certification Medication Aide (CMA) role at Midwest Health, Inc.
Base pay rangeDuties and Responsibilities
- The Certified Medication Aide administers medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and the RCC. Medications are administered in accordance with established nursing standards, community policies, procedures, and state requirements.
- Comply with the Community’s personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures.
- Comply with the nursing department’s policies and procedures.
- Report witnessed or reported allegations of resident abuse/neglect immediately to the Executive Director, RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
- Treat residents, family members, visitors, and team members with respect and dignity.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident and family information.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled.
- Report complaints/grievances by residents to the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse or per policy; participate in Community surveys (inspections) as requested by leadership.
- Maintain a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
- Protect resident privacy when administering medication; accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director; document and report errors immediately.
- Ensure all medications are properly labeled and follow storage, labeling, and dating policies.
- Complete medication charting per Community policy and procedure.
- Assist with following policies regarding the destroying of medications and documenting/removing discontinued medications.
- Follow procedures for drug receipt errors, notify appropriate sources and leadership as required.
- Follow procedures for holding medications for residents out of the Community or per physician’s order; honor resident right to refuse medications.
- Observe and verify medication ingestion or application; document refusals and reasons.
- Notify leadership of refusals or reactions to medications; ensure a written, signed, dated order exists from an attending licensed physician; verify resident identity before administering medication.
- Follow procedures allowing residents to self-administer medications; assist and document related activities; notify nurse when refills are needed.
- Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration as used by the Community, pharmacists, and physicians.
- Use personal protective equipment when procedures involve exposure to blood or body fluids; report hazardous conditions and equipment immediately; follow safety precautions for all duties.
- Wash hands before and after resident service.
- Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per Community policies.
- Assist residents with daily hygiene and activities of daily living, and assist CNAs as needed.

Physical Requirements
- Regular worksite attendance.
- Must have a valid CMA certification in good standing with the State.
- If required to operate a motor vehicle, comply with the Company’s Motor Vehicles policy.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Must be able to work beyond normal hours and on weekends/holidays when necessary.
- Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet general health requirements per state regulations and Company policy (may include medical and physical exams).
- Ability to lift and move items as specified (up to 50 lbs in certain circumstances) and to assist residents with mobility using transfer belts or assistance as needed.
- Primary physical requirements include lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, hand manipulation, and other specified movements as described in policy.
- Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile individuals within the Community.
- Must be able to see and hear or use appropriate prosthetics to meet job requirements.
