Job Summary

The Parents As Teacher Educator is to assist parents in becoming their child’s first teacher and ensure parents and children are ready for kindergarten entry.

Terms of Employment

9 months;
Beginning school year 26-27 and for future terms.

Qualifications
  • 4 (four) year Bachelors Degree in an early childhood related field or
  • 2 (two) year Associates Degree in an early childhood related field with 2 years successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE or
  • 5 (five) years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Other Necessary Qualifications
  • Able to work effectively in a variety of home and community settings
  • Must obtain and maintain required certification as a Parent Educator
  • Experience working with young children and their families
  • Demonstrate strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate initiative and accountability
  • Able to convey information clearly and professionally
  • Must provide dependable, personal transportation to complete home visits

Essential Job Functions
  • Schedule, prepare and complete personal visits with parents on assigned caseload.
  • Assist with preparation and attend parent group meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in recruiting new families to the program.
  • Administer developmental screening to children on own caseload, other students ages 3, 4, and 5 and assigned in the spring new Kindergarten students.
  • Maintain records of service to families on caseload.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Seek guidance on situations which seem to warrant referral or specialized service.
  • Perform extra assignments (i.e. visit new families at the hospitals, facilitate teen parent meetings, etc.).
  • Use personal visits, developmental screenings, group meetings and referrals to other agencies/services to help prepare children for success in kindergarten.
  • Demonstrates and imparts knowledge of child development, child rearing practices and age appropriate activities.
  • Instructs parents on relevant information regarding child development, language, motor and social skills and age appropriate milestones.
  • Models and teaches appropriate verbal interactions, communication techniques and behavior management techniques between parent and child.
  • Addresses parent concerns, research information and connect parents to community resources as needed.
  • Implements the approved Parents as Teacher curriculum.
  • Monitors progress of child’s development.
  • Conducts health and developmental screenings for children on an annual basis.
  • Provides verbal and written summaries of screening results to parents.
  • Recognize and inform on behavior and/or development of child that deviates from expected norms.
  • Develops intervention strategies for areas of concern and provide appropriate in-service for parents to implement these strategies.
  • Makes appropriate referrals for additional evaluations or screenings as needed.
  • Maintains files to include records of all screenings and transfer to appropriate elementary school.
  • Maintains accurate mileage and student contact records for reporting.
  • Models positive behavior for students (i.e. inter-personal communication, processes, social interactions, etc.) for the purpose of providing educational and life skills training.
