Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the supervision and direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for performing routine accounting functions that directly impact the organization’s financial performance. Certain of these tasks are the sole responsibility of the Assistant Controller, while others provide assistance to the Controller in the accomplishment of overall departmental and hospital goals.

Responsibilities and Competencies
  • Adheres to policies on appropriate information access and security.
  • Respects patient confidentiality.
  • Prepares numerous journal entries that form the basis of the monthly financial closing process.
  • Monitors status and accuracy of monthly statistical reporting processes, identifies discrepancies, and directs Accountants in the resolution thereof.
  • Generates routine, monthly financial reports and any ad‑hoc reports requested, extracting data from multiple source systems.
  • Performs monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts to ensure the integrity of financial statement reporting.
  • Understands the flow of transactions and reporting mechanisms that define the overall Accounts Payable function, tracks staff productivity, and acts as an informal leader to the group.
  • Supports the Payroll Coordinator in the generation of manual checks and select payroll processing functions.
  • Assists with formulation of departmental operating and capital budgets, providing guidance and support to managers.
  • Prepares work papers for Medicare/Medicaid cost reports and for internal audit reviews, researching and resolving queries.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Controller or Chief Financial Officer.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of HCA accounting principles and practices, including daily transaction impact on financial statements.
  • Utilizes and instructs staff in computer systems such as HOST, Kronos, PLUS+, SMART, Clear Access, Decision Support and Remark.
  • Communicates effectively in oral and written formats.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends, regulations and legislation in accounting and healthcare industries.
  • Prioritizes multiple work assignments effectively and maintains compliance with hospital and corporate standards.
  • Communicates problems or concerns regarding the accounting department promptly to the Controller.
  • Provides accurate and timely service to key stakeholders and maintains a professional appearance and work ethic.
  • Promotes teamwork and cooperation within the department.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA preferred.
  • Experience with mainframe and PC‑based reporting systems preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of healthcare accounting experience.
