Position: Human Service Faculty - Full-Time, 9-Months

Overview

West Virginia Northern Community College is seeking applicants for a nine (9) month full-time faculty member to teach in the Liberal Arts and Public Service Division. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student advising, recruiting, program assessment and curriculum development. This position will be based on the Wheeling campus with some teaching responsibilities at the Weirton or New Martinsville Campus.

Salary will be based on the current faculty salary scale. Full benefits package including retirement with employer matching, health insurance, life insurance, Social Security, and Northern tuition waivers.

Responsibilities

Members of the full-time teaching faculty have three primary areas of responsibility:

  • instruction
  • academic advising / professional development
  • institutional and community service

Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Follow the rules and regulations of the College.
  • Develop a syllabus for each course taught. Submit each syllabus electronically to the Division Chair by the first day of class. Follow the College guidelines for syllabus construction.
  • Teach thirty credits or 600 health sciences contact hours during day and/or evening per academic year. The Division Chair and/or Vice President for Learning may adjust as necessary.
  • Meet classes and provide instruction for classes as scheduled.
  • Notify the Division Chair of the intent to travel on college business in advance. Complete an Absence Form and submit to the Division Chair.
  • Notify the Division Secretary of unexpected absences so arrangements can be made for classes. Submit the Absence Form upon return to the Division Chair.
  • Maintain a minimum of ten office hours per week, two by appointment, distributed over five days, including the week before classes begin and during final exam week. Complete the Faculty Teaching and Office Schedule Form with the Division Secretary within the first week of classes.
  • Report first week attendance and final grades via NOW and within established deadlines.
  • Advise students in the program with academic counseling, course scheduling, withdrawal/retention counseling, and career guidance and preparation.
  • Participate in commencement ceremonies.
  • Prepare program reviews, annual reports, part-time faculty evaluations, self-study reports for accreditation, course and program assessment reports, and other reports/projects related to the program.
  • Assist the Division Chair in equipment maintenance and procurement recommendations.
  • Assist in preparing semester schedules and in the selection of textbooks for courses taught.
  • Assist in proposals and development of new courses, programs, and certificates.
  • Meet with Program Advisory Committee at least once a year to review the program and make changes as necessary.
  • Recruit students for the program by visiting high schools, college fairs, and businesses/agencies related to the program/major or discipline.
  • Advise and assist students in choosing a major (Certificate of Applied Science or Associate of Applied Science), financial aid and funding options, registration, and placement in practicums, internships, or apprenticeship programs where applicable.
  • Assist in evaluating and supervising students serving as lab assistants or work-study positions.
  • Review portfolios for the Board of Governors Degree and other programs related to assessment of experiential learning.
  • Participate in institutional activities such as college-wide events, standing/ad hoc committees, marketing, and public service activities.
  • Attend faculty assembly meetings, division meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other faculty-related events as identified by the administration.
  • Participate in professional development activities and organizations.
  • Integrate writing, technology, computer applications, and oral presentation requirements into courses where applicable.
  • Work with workforce development and campus deans to offer credit or non-credit courses, seminars, or workshops as appropriate.
  • Represent Northern positively in alignment with institutional goals and initiatives.
Qualifications

Master's degree in social work, counseling, alcohol/drug counseling, psychology, or related field with at least 3 years of clinical experience in the Human Services delivery field required. Professional licensure (LSW, LPC, APA, WVCBAPP) preferred. College teaching experience, use of instructional technologies, and experience with distance education including Zoom and online formats preferred.
