Assists in the implementation of nursing care and services for the patients undergoing endoscopic procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse. Plans and implements basic endoscopy case management of instruments, supplies and equipment by following age-specific and procedure-specific care guidelines. Assumes responsibility for "on call" coverage. Performs duties in a professional manner consistent with hospital policies and procedures, accepted standards, and current state and federal regulations.
Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain a steady level of productivity. Communication on behalf of the patient reflects the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a surgical technician program, nurse aid program, or medical assistant program.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
- One (1) year of experience working in an OR or endoscopic setting.

- Creates and maintains a sterile field.
- Uses principles of aseptic technique in varying situations.
- Inspects sterile items for contamination before opening and maintains sterility while opening sterile items for procedure.
- Recognizes unseen boundaries between sterile and unsterile.
- Saves and identifies all specimens according to policy and procedure.
- Prepares instruments according to physician’s preference and procedure.
- Under direction of registered nurse prepares medications used on surgical table.
- Prepares endoscopy scopes and equipment needed for procedure.
- Assists registered nurse in planning patient care.
- Adapts the procedure to meet individual age-specific needs of the patient.
- Prepares room in a timely manner with anticipated equipment, instruments, and supplies needed for procedure.
- Ensures availability of supplies prior to procedure.
- Uses supplies judiciously in a cost-effective manner.
- Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurances consistently.
- Assists with biopsy forceps electro cauterization devices, other equipment.
- Positions patient for procedure ensuring patient safety and comfort.
- Prepares pathology specimens for the laboratory.
- Meets patient safety risks related to sedation/anesthesia.
- Keep physician informed on any matter which may have an effect in the patient’s medical care or general well-being in hospital environment.
- Takes scheduling for endoscopy procedures.
- Keeps charge nurse and/or physician informed about reportable incidents and departmental concerns.
- Maintains two-way communication in a professional manner including:
- Keeping charge nurse informed.
- Establish and maintains good rapport with staff.
- Performs and/or assists with clinical preceptor role.
- Presents/assists with department in-service presentations.
- Attends all hospital mandatory skill updates and training classes.
- Performs non-clinical duties that relates to department operations:
- Maintains a clean, neat and safe environment for patients and staff.
- Cleans rooms between procedures.
- Ensures that supplies and equipment are stored in an organized and efficient manner.
- Rooms are restocked at the end of the day, or sooner if needed.
- Maintains compliance with department “call” coverage and with “call-in” times and policies.
