Pharmacy Technician –
WVU Medicine
Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs various duties in the Pharmacy department including transcribing physician's written orders, delivering requested medications to nursing stations and other hospital departments, charging replacement vouchers, filling medication bags, replacing floor stock, preparing IV admixtures, and maintaining a clean and orderly pharmacy workroom.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Pharmacy Technician License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
- Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health career Association (NHA).
- Previous experience with pharmaceutical products and distribution.
- Fills medication orders and carts for distribution to patient floors; exchanges medication from carts on a daily basis.
- Prepackages special medications into unit-dose form with pharmacist verification; packages tablets, liquids, and suppositories in proper dosage form with accurate documentation.
- Delivers medications and intravenous solutions to nursing stations and other departments as necessary; collects discontinued and expired medications from carts; accurately delivers medication to pharmacy automated medication stations.
- Refills automated dispensing device as appropriate and troubleshoots problems with devices as needed; distributes requested patient medications to Emergency Room, Outpatient Department, surgery after verification for accuracy by Staff Pharmacist; obtains distilled water and other supplies from various departments; maintains records regarding distribution of medications; completes reports as needed.
- Processes discharges and transfers upon receipt.
- Accurately charges and credits patient medication(s), including controlled substance administration records in a timely manner.
- Maintains adequate level of medications and supplies in main pharmacy workroom; replenishes shelves and drawers with tablets, capsules, liquids, injections, ophthalmics, antacids, and suppositories; prepares list of specific medications used to prepare and fill patient medications.
- Answers telephone calls for medications; relays messages to appropriate individual in pharmacy department.
- Transfers patient medication file to separate file after discharge, credits unused medication, and charges used medication according to pharmacy procedures.
- Maintains pharmacy in a clean and orderly condition; cleans and dusts shelves, washes, and cleans refrigerators and other departmental equipment.
- Assists in preparing orders for storeroom supplies; unpacks and stores supplies in proper location.
- Inspects pharmacy stock for expirations or improper packaging; completes all assigned medication storage area inspections.
- Complies with all departmental policies and procedures as well as hospital wide and departmental Infection Control standards.
- Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile preparations using proper aseptic technique (including parenteral nutrition) accurately; complies with USP 797 regulations for preparing intravenous admixtures, completes quality assurance activities, cleans IV hoods and documents all required activities.
- Accurately calculates pharmaceutical doses and works with multiple units of measure in the routine preparation of medications/solutions.
- Maintains technician registration and competency documentation.
- Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation as required; maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
- Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees and students.
- Utilizes pharmacy automation that includes performing Pyxis filling processes, generates reports, reconciles discrepancies, delivers medications and processes returns; serves as a Pyxis trouble shooter with patient care areas as needed; accurately accesses controlled medications from the C II – safe for Pyxis delivery.
