Position: Peer Tutor (Part-Time Student Employee)

Located in Greater Boston, Mass Bay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

Position Summary

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant and inclusive educational community and have a desire and ability to work with a diverse population. This is a part-time, student employment position with no benefits.

The Academic Achievement Center facilitates the Peer Tutoring Program. This is a free tutoring service for Mass Bay students who wish to seek support in a variety of subject matters. The purpose of the program is to help Mass Bay students gain a better understanding of important course concepts, strengthen their time management, organization and/or study skills, all while building confidence in their academic abilities.

Peer Tutors are students who excel in their areas of study and who enjoy helping fellow students achieve academic success. All tutors are trained according to the national College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and provide assistance through high quality one-to-one and group tutoring.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Meet with students on a one-to-one, small-group, or classroom tutoring format(s) to give learning assistance.
  • Communicate orally and in writing, and demonstrate course knowledge through other modalities, such as drawing, building, or other creative ways to show examples.
  • Attend training sessions as scheduled (all training is paid).
  • Assist with general needs of the Academic Achievement Center, such as greeting students, scheduling appointments, and other projects as assigned.
  • Follow the attendance policy and communicate appropriately for sick time and requested time off.
  • Will be trained in Web Ex and/or Zoom to facilitate virtual tutoring sessions when working remote.
  • Will be trained on the scheduling software Student Trac.
  • Responsible for submitting their time through the HR payroll system weekly.
  • Will be required to complete additional hiring documentation when necessary.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in at least one credit-bearing course at Mass Bay.
  • Must have at least an overall cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher. Peer Tutors must have at least a B+ or higher in the courses they wish to tutor.
  • In good academic and judicial standing with the college.
  • Submit a Faculty Referral form completed by the instructor or department chairperson.
  • Good communication skills – able to work with a wide range of personalities and academic skill levels.
  • Possess a solid base knowledge of the course, feel comfortable and confident with the materials and be able to demonstrate good study habits.
  • Comfortable working with technology and using video conferencing programs.
  • Ability to work at least 4 hours per week. Work schedules will be determined at time of hire and tutor availability.
