- Location: 230 Worcester Street, Wellesley, MA 02481
- Department: Laboratory
- Schedule: Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 10:00am – 6:30pm, rotating weekends and holidays.
- Collect blood specimens for laboratory testing utilizing venipuncture, skin puncture finger sticks and heel sticks. The method and complexity of the collection may vary by site.
- Collect non‑blood specimens such as urine, sputum and throat swab/throat cultures.
- Check the test requisition or computer label to assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Bring discrepancies to the attention of the test originator or other lab personnel for correction.
- Assemble equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verify or record identity of patient and converse with patient to allay fear of procedure.
- For venipuncture testing, apply tourniquet to arm, locate accessible vein, swab puncture area with antiseptic, and insert needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag. Withdraw needle, apply treatment to puncture site, label and store blood container for subsequent processing.
- Initials, dates and times all collections. Maintain daily tallies of collections performed.
- Access specimens and process them to prepare for laboratory testing.
- Record requests for blood collections; answer general questions concerning test orders and collection; take messages or route calls.
- May perform waived or moderately complex testing utilizing a test kit or lab instrument, such as bacterial overgrowth. Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of the device. Have knowledge of reagent stability and storage. Follow quality control procedures. May administer EKG testing and Holter monitors, including patient instructions and questions, quality control testing and send‑out process.
- May perform proficiency testing. Understand factors influencing test results. Run the quality control report before reporting in order to provide valid patient test results. Understand the testing procedure. Follow procedure when reporting test values.
- Contribute to the general laboratory functions and organizational needs. Attend regular department staff meetings and in‑service training.
- Keep work area neat and clean, and restock daily supplies.
- May perform receptionist duties including greeting patient, reviewing laboratory request sheets, informing patient of additional instructions, responding to questions.
- Perform various computer functions as needed related to processing of specimens.
- Perform clerical duties including recording of daily specimen volumes, maintaining supplies of patient questionnaires and filing.
- May be assigned to assist in training student interns and new employees.
- May be assigned to various clinical areas to assist with specimen processing and testing procedures.
- Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures and review policy and procedures on an annual basis.
- Ensure excellent communication, collaboration and cooperation with coworkers, medical staff and supervisors. Inform them of workflow or technical issues.
- Adhere to all PPE while handling biohazards especially the use of gloves and handwashing.
- Utilize safety devices for sharps in accordance with established procedures.
