POSITION TITLE:
Streets Maintenance and Fleet Mechanic
The Street Maintenance and Fleet Mechanic worker, under general supervision, maintains the Town fleet and provides general streets maintenance. Performs a full range of routine automotive service and repair duties and serves on the streets team to maintain and service Town roads and facilities. This is an essential Town position that must participate in a 24‑hour on‑call rotation, requiring a 30‑minute response time, and will assist with snow removal.
ESSENTIALDUTIES

- Inspects, diagnoses, and maintains routine service needs; repairs a variety of heavy and medium‑duty fleet units (including but not limited to loaders, graders, dump trucks, and street sweepers); light‑duty automotive fleet units (automobiles and trucks); and small fleet units (riding lawn mowers, bobcats, and tractors)
- Develops and maintains relationships with vendors and manages all outside contractors who perform mechanical work
- Tracks and maintains performed services on fleet units in partnership with the Fleet and Safety Coordinator
- Prepares decommissioned units for sale/trade; upfits new units to put into service
- Purchases and maintains an inventory of parts, supplies, and materials; initiates the procurement of equipment and associated components, tools, and supplies as needed
- Submits all fleet‑related purchase orders and invoices; prepares work orders and estimates of time and parts needed; maintains other records as needed
- Performs repairs and tune‑ups on gasoline engines, compressed natural gas, electric, and alternate fuels
- Repairs, rebuilds, or adjusts all mechanical, electrical and computer systems to include brakes, batteries, wiring, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic valve systems, and high‑pressure pumps
- Makes service calls on fleet units to perform emergency repairs; conducts road tests of fleet units to diagnose any malfunction; evaluates fleet units experiencing frequent breakdowns to determine cause and attempt to prevent future occurrences
- Operates hand and power shop tools to perform repairs and/or to fabricate machine parts for fleet units
- Changes and repairs tires and tubes as necessary
- Performs acetylene and electric welding, brazing or cuffing of machine parts, and tempering and sharpening of tools as required
- Responsible for getting vehicles from all departments for preventative maintenance; maintains fleet database
- Snow plowing, sanding, and ice control duties as assigned; must be available to work after normal working hours and on weekends as needed for snow/ice control maintenance during winter months (September 1 – April 30)
- Involved in all aspects of asphalt and concrete repair and maintenance; shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base in patching, repairing, and reconstruction streets
- Participate in the marking of streets and curbs; installation of signposts and signs; install pavement marking; and perform basic building tasks; install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair
- Trim and remove trees and root systems from public right‑of‑way areas; clean debris from streets, ditches, and other public right‑of‑way areas
- May be required to work weekends, or at night, and participate in the on‑call rotation
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of all applicable Department of Transportation laws, including local and state regulations
- Skilled in maintenance and operation of vehicles with diesel and gas engines of all sizes, including tractors, street sweepers, and snowplows
- Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and audio systems, plumbing, HVAC, hydraulics, hybrid and computer systems
