About the role:
We are in the process of building and rolling out our next generation, dynamic, scalable, and resilient Fulfilment platform for Tesco, to address both manual, and robotic powered automated fulfilment operations, across all the customer order fulfilment locations. This highly optimized and continuously improving fulfilment platform is designed to be used to fulfil all product categories - Grocery /GM and Fashion, of Customer Orders.
This platform, Fulfilment Point System (FPS), enables all the customer order fulfilment centres across different geographies to pick, marshal and dispatch customer orders on one hand and manage the site workflow through a real-time visualisation and intervention tool, on the other hand. Ours is a globally distributed, full stack java tech team and our building blocks consist of a set of Microservice components, backend APIs, Rich UI, robust Eventing Platform and Data layer components utilising a wide range of modern technologies including:
Java, RxJava, Spring Boot Kafka, PostgreSQL and Couchbase Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Azure Dev Ops, Git Hub Actions, Splunk, New Relic Azure Cloud We are responsible for the software throughout the lifecycle. We follow a strong Dev Ops culture, owning services end-to-end from development through to production support.

You will be responsible for:
We’re looking for a Backend Engineer (SDE2) with strong experience in building scalable, distributed Java systems. This is a mid-level individual contributor role where you’ll work on meaningful backend features, support others, and develop your technical leadership skills.
As a key member of our engineering team, you will develop robust, scalable and efficient backend services to optimise fulfilment operations and drive operational success.
Backend Development:
Build scalable, resilient Java-based backend services, APIs, and microservices to support fulfilment workflows and systems.
Feature Delivery:
Implement and ship end-to-end stories, primarily focused on frontend with some backend integration.
Technical Contribution:
Take ownership of medium-sized features and participate in their design and delivery.
Collaboration:
Work closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to understand problems and propose solutions.
Code Quality:
Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to peer reviews to raise the team’s quality bar.
Support & Mentorship:
Help onboard junior engineers and share knowledge across the team.
Continuous Improvement:
Apply best practices and contribute to improving development processes and standards.
You will need:
Experience relevant for this job:
Previous experience of having done product development using agile methodologies
Hands-on experience of building and supporting reliable and operationally robust distributed Java applications / products
Any previous experience of having contributed in a globally distributed software engineering teams would be a big plus.
Tech Skills Relevant Experience Demonstrated impact across a software engineering team.
Experience designing, developing and operating backend components or services
Exposure to agile methodologies and Dev Ops practices.
