Overview

The Board of Police and Fire Commissioners for the City of West Allis is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer from January 12, 2026, through 4 p.m. on February 13, 2026, to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

Salary

The starting annual pay for Police Officers residing in the City of West Allis as of July 1, 2026 is $65,884.06 and rises in five annual increments to $99,019.54. Non‑resident officers receive a starting salary of $64,662.69, which also rises in five annual increments to $97,147.44. All new hires begin at Step 1 of the pay scale. Applicants with prior law‑enforcement experience may be offered a higher starting wage upon approval of the Police Chief and the Commission.

Employees are expected to participate in direct deposit of payroll checks.

Duties
  • Stop vehicles to investigate, cite, or arrest occupants; investigate vehicle accidents; respond to alarms.
  • Examine and test doors and windows, direct traffic at accidents, parades, and crime scenes, and maintain control of police vehicles, including high‑speed pursuits.
  • Remove hazards, request emergency assistance, coordinate backup officers, and package and transport evidence.
  • Assist EMTs, conduct CPR, and handle medical emergencies on the scene.
  • Handcuff suspects, subdue resisting persons, and use chemical spray, baton, or firearms as appropriate.
  • Conduct searches, communicate verbally via radios, use keyboards for reports, and respond to public inquiries.
  • Interview complainants, witnesses, drivers, advise on rights, mediate disputes, testify in court, and issue citations.
  • Support the Constitution of the United States, the State of Wisconsin, and the City ordinances; conduct thorough investigations and submit complete reports.
  • Inspect equipment at the start of duty, report deficiencies, and maintain physical and mental readiness.
Qualifications
  • Age 21 or older at the date of hire (photocopy of birth certificate required).
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Education:

    B.A. in Criminal Justice or related field, A.A. in Police Science, or 60 college credits in the field, all by July 1, 2026.
  • Transcripts must be sent in a sealed envelope from the institution or electronically; final transcripts can be emailed directly to Deputy Chief Christopher Marks.
  • Physical requirement:
    Must perform job‑related functions as certified by an appointed physician and meet the exit standards of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Physical Readiness Test.
  • Driver’s License:
    Valid unrestricted Wisconsin driver’s license required; restrictions only for physical reasons may affect medical exam decisions.
  • Good Moral Character:
    No felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions for moral turpitude.
  • Typing Ability:
    Minimum 30 words per minute.
  • Residency Requirement:
    Within 18 months of employment, the officer must establish residency in the City or designated perimeter limits described.
