Join us as an Electrician for the City of West Allis and help keep our lights on and our streets safe! We are looking for a Certified Journeyman or Master Electrician who enjoys working outdoors. In this role, you will maintain, inspect, and repair electrical wiring systems and equipment. Your responsibilities will include managing street lighting, lighting services in parks, playgrounds, and parking lots, and lighting for public services and buildings.
You will also be tasked with installing and maintaining the traffic control system throughout the city.
This position requires that our candidates be available to work nights, weekends, overtime, and unusual hours in case of emergencies and participate in rotational watch duty when assigned. Additionally, they must possess emotional intelligence, a strong work ethic, accountability, and initiative to fulfill the role's responsibilities effectively.
This position guarantees regular work and requires only local travel within West Allis. The starting hourly rate for this position begins at $32.63 to $44.86 based on education, experience, and certifications. Install, modify, repair, load, and test electrical systems, including wiring, circuits, outlets, fixtures, switches, switchboards, panel boards, transformers, and other devices to ensure they operate safely and correctly. Test, repair, or replace parts of worn-out equipment like motors, generators, storage batteries, and timing devices. Perform preventive maintenance tasks, such as inspecting, cleaning, oiling, adjusting electrical systems, and locating underground cables as part of the Diggers Hotline Network.
For low- and high-voltage systems, troubleshoot cable issues, find shorts, opens, grounds, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalances, or cable breaks using tools like voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers, and thumpers. String and pull wires to ensure proper tension and sag, install and pull cables underground, splice and connect wires, and repair or replace streetlight poles, bases, and luminaires. Maintain and replace beacon lights on City water towers, direct the raising of poles, inspect transformers and switches, check transformer temperatures, and test insulating oil for breakdowns and contamination.
Responsible for checking voltage at secondary terminals and repairing defective, loose, or corroded connections. They operate primary circuit cutout mechanisms and handle necessary repairs and replacements. Maintain low-voltage control cabinets, including replacing breakers, repairing contractors, and maintaining time clocks. Knowledgeable in sketch circuits, estimating costs, and ordering materials and supplies.
Engage safely from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and maintenance manuals to plan and lay out electrical lines, circuits, systems, and controls. They suggest improvements to procedures to enhance efficiency and support planning and innovation initiatives. They attend work regularly, communicate clearly and truthfully, testify in court when needed, drive designated vehicles lawfully while performing their duties, and travel across various properties within their jurisdiction.

Our Electrician must be available to work nights, weekends, occasional overtime, and at odd hours when emergencies require such duty, and to serve on rotational watch duty when assigned, and possess the emotional intelligence, work ethic, accountability, and initiative to perform the duties of the position effectively.
