Locum Consultant in Anasthesia WSI in Intensive Care Medicine
We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and progressive individual.
Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to join our "Outstanding" CQC-rated Critical Care team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a highly recognised and forward-thinking specialty within the Trust. This is a 6-month fixed term post. The appointee will primarily work at the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) but may provide services at other sites as needed.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be eligible within six months of the interview date, with extensive training and experience in both critical care and anaesthesia. We welcome candidates with additional clinical or diagnostic skills that will enhance our team, such as accreditation in ultrasound.
The job plan will incorporate a 50:50 split of daytime clinical activity between critical care and anaesthesia. The successful applicant will contribute to a dedicated consultant roster that covers both day and night shifts, with an on-call rota aiming for 1 in 16 soon.
This job is a 6-month fixed term position.
Closing date: 16th November 2025
Interview date: 28th November 2025
The post supports the expansion of our critical care and anaesthetic services at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), with potential cross-site responsibilities. We welcome applicants with additional clinical, educational, or leadership interests that will enrich our consultant team.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months of interview, with broad training and experience in both intensive care and anaesthesia. Our Critical Care service is rated "Outstanding" by the CQC, and our Anaesthesia Directorate is recognised for its strong training culture and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The role is structured as a 50:50 split between intensive care and anaesthesia, with flexibility in job planning. The successful candidate will join the ICU on-call rota, aiming for a 1 in 16 frequency, and contribute to daytime cover across our 30-bed closed-unit ICU. Anaesthetic duties will include elective and emergency work across a broad range of specialities. You will also support the Enhanced Postoperative Care Unit adjacent to the ICU.
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opened in October 2024 and provides care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises.
The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
- Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
- Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve liveses
