Job Description

A Brief Overview

Provides basic resident care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Utilizes a resident-centered approach to provide personal care and assistance with activities of daily living. The CNA/Universal Worker performs routine daily nursing care and other services in accordance with the resident's assessment, choices, and care plan to ensure quality of care at all times.

• Personal Care: bathing and dressing residents as care planned; assist with hygiene, hair, nails, and dental care; prepare residents for appointments and visitors; assist with end-of-life care as needed; observe skin changes and report to the nurse; respond to resident calls and assist as needed.
• Exercise/Restorative/Rehabilitative Care: position residents for comfort; assist with lifting, turning, moving, and positioning; carry out restorative and rehabilitative programs as planned; guide residents in self-help and use of medical devices to maintain function.
• Elimination: assist residents to the bathroom; manage incontinence care per care plan; monitor urinary and bowel outputs as directed by a physician.
• Food Service Functions: serve meals and ensure appropriate textures and fluids; follow sanitation and dietary policies; promote a positive dining experience; assist with eating; record meal and fluid intakes; provide clothing protectors as needed.
• Vital Signs and Weights: weigh residents as ordered; obtain vital signs as needed; monitor for pain and report to the nurse.
• Housekeeping Functions: address spills, maintain clean and safe rooms and common areas, monitor for hazards, ensure hand hygiene stations are stocked, manage resident laundry as scheduled, clean equipment such as lifts and wheelchairs.
• Activity Functions: participate in planning and facilitating resident activities; assist residents to and from activities; supervise residents with electronic wandering devices; participate in care plan meetings quarterly.

• Previous experience in the medical field (preferred)
• Ability to answer call lights promptly and provide comfort and nourishment between meals
• Knowledge of customer service principles and processes
• Understanding of human behavior, learning, and motivation
• Strong communication and listening skills; ability to interact professionally with patients and staff
• Ability to exert physical effort to lift, push, pull, or carry objects as required
• Discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff
• Knowledge of care procedures, safety policies, and HIPAA requirements
• Certified Nursing Assistant Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry required upon hire
• Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa

EFRC (Emergency First Responder Choking) required within 90 days of hire and renewed every 2 years.
