Teacher Assistant – 190 Days

Summary

Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in small group pupil instruction; tutors pupils at teacher’s request.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other functions.
  • Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units.
  • Handles attendance reports and related clerical functions with the teacher.
  • Assists in assembling/hanging materials on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.
  • Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.
  • Assists in after school and academic assistance lab.
  • Encourages proper student behavior in accordance to school collective commitments.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise students.

Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

High school diploma or GED, a passing score on the Work Keys Assessment Test and at least one of the following:

  • At least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • An associate’s degree (or higher).
  • An approved state or local academic assessment that measures the paraprofessional’s knowledge of and ability to assist in instruction of subjects at the appropriate level (Para Pro).

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other

Skills and Abilities:

Previous work in child care; develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

Frequently required to sit and talk or hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture. Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

The noise level is usually very loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment. The employee is continuously responsible for the safety, well‑being, and work output of students.
