GIS COORDINATOR

West Des Moines Water Works is now accepting applications for the GIS Coordinator position. Under general supervision of the Business Relations Manager performs GIS duties of a generally standardized nature which requires some independent judgment. Coordinates and communicates with Urbandale Water Utility (3720 86th Street, Urbandale IA 50322) as a contractually shared position (50/50) effectively doing the same duties and responsibilities;

does related work as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts self through high standards of professionalism and effective communication in representing both West Des Moines Water Works and Urbandale Water Utility.
  • Administers and manages geospatial technologies and data sharing, GIS application development, report and map generation, and selection of GIS software, hardware, or services among both utilities.
  • Effectively manages multiple projects and develops project reports, plans and schedules.
  • Keeps up to date with latest and upcoming GIS and integrated technologies, analyzes new technical products, systems, and plans for adapting GIS infrastructure to meet future business needs.
  • Oversees and performs server maintenance and monitors user access to data in coordination with utility Information Technology.
  • Responds to requests as needed regarding GIS data, records and mapping related inquiries.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Sciences, geography, computer science, engineering or a related field with GIS emphasis
  • Minimum of three years of related experience with professional knowledge of engineering principles preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work will also be considered.
  • Valid Iowa driver’s license upon appointment and maintained. Ability to travel between Urbandale and West Des Moines Water Works, in necessary.
  • GIS Professional (GISP) Certification or ESRI Technical Certification (Associate level or higher) preferred.

Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of GIS and Enterprise geodatabase concepts, design, and management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS product suite.
  • Knowledge of GIS data collection methods and technologies including methods of surveying and understanding of high accuracy GPS systems.
  • Knowledge of GIS data models such as water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, addressing, and transportation networks.
  • Skill in programming for customizing GIS and related resources including SQL, Python, Arcade, and MS Power Automate.

  • Long periods of sitting
  • As a shared position between West Des Moines Water works and Urbandale Water Utility, this position will split weeks between offices at 1505 Railroad, West Des Moines and 3720 86th Street, Urbandale. Any travel between physical offices while scheduled at the other office location will include mileage reimbursement.
  • Intermittent periods of movement between buildings and offices
  • Constant talking, hearing, near and far sight acuity, field of vision, concentration, handling, dexterity, and judgment
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 10 pounds or reasonable accommodation consistent with ADA requirements
  • Tasks may involve occasional reaching or working from varied postures; alternative methods, assistive devices, or adjustments can be used to perform these activities as long as essential job functions are met.
