Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN)

Shift: 12 Hour Day Shift (7 AM - 7 PM)
General SummaryProvides professional emergency nursing care for acutely ill and injured patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Provides patient and family education, serves as a patient advocate, liaison with other health care providers, and preceptor for new employees and students.
Essential Functions- Apply professional emergency nursing skills in the care and treatment of acutely ill and injured patients using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Promote patient‑centered care through:

- Transition and continuity
- Collaborate with the patient, significant others, and ancillary departments to create a multidisciplinary healthcare team focused on continuous, well‑coordinated care.
- Provide education needs and include education in the plan of care.
- Communicate proactively to the healthcare team the plan of care, changes in the patient’s condition, the patient’s progress, the discharge plan, and other relevant information.
- Respond quickly, efficiently, and calmly to emergent and critical situations.
- Manage the complex care of critically ill and injured patients.
- Triage patients quickly and efficiently per the Emergency Department’s policies specific to triage.
- Document a comprehensive patient record that is organized and complete, reflecting all aspects of nursing care provided.
- Anticipate patient needs and assist the provider during examination and procedures.
- Provide psychological support based on assessed need.
- Utilize multiple teaching methods. Review discharge instructions and confirm understanding by patient/family.
- Assess community resources as indicated.
- Supervise Emergency Department Technicians.
- Serve as a preceptor for students and employees (e.g., EMS, nursing, new employees).
- Work independently using the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and professional judgment. Make recommendations to improve the Emergency Department’s standards of care.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
- One year of RN experience preferred; new graduate accepted if completed senior nursing preceptorship at Mercy Emergency or has experience as an emergency department technician or in a pre‑hospital environment.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to the population served within 3 months of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within six (6) weeks of hire (American Heart Association Basic Life Support or equivalent).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) completion within 6 months of hire.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) completion within 1 year of hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) completion within 3 months of hire.
