The Nurse Navigator in Hematology/Oncology serves as a clinical resource, advocate, and coordinator for patients diagnosed with blood disorders and cancer. This role is pivotal in guiding patients through the complex continuum of cancer care — from diagnosis through survivorship or end-of-life care. The Nurse Navigator ensures patients have access to education, timely treatment, psychosocial support, and coordinated care across multiple specialties.

A day in the life…
Wondering what a day in the life of an Hematology/Oncology Nurse Navigator at The Iowa Clinic might look like?
- Serve as the main contact for patients and families, offering continuous support from diagnosis to follow-up.
- Coordinate all aspects of patient care, including scheduling appointments, labs, imaging, and treatments.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams such as oncologists, surgeons, and administrative staff.
- Provide personalized education and emotional support tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Identify and help overcome barriers to care, such as financial, transportation, or insurance issues.
- Track patient outcomes and monitor treatment effectiveness for ongoing improvement.
- Participate actively in care planning meetings, tumor boards, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Stay current on clinical trials, maintain professional development, and ensure adherence to safety and infection control protocols.
Minimal Requirements
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or willingness to obtain within 12 months
- Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
- State of Iowa Mandatory Reporter Certification is required (must be able to obtain within 60 days of hire).
- Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience in oncology and/or hematology required. Previous experience in case management, patient education, or care coordination helpful.
- A desire to find a meaningful, fulfilling career
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills with knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures, medical diagnoses and treatments
- Exceptional patient skills demonstrating empathy and emotional resilience in working with seriously ill patients.
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal)

- Ability to assist physicians in professional manner
