Heat Treat Operator

The United Tool & Die Company is a family‑owned manufacturing company in Hartford, CT, seeking a full‑time Heat Treating Operator. Our company produces parts for the aerospace industry.

Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager, the Heat Treating Operator sets up and operates heat‑treat equipment, examines problems, performs minor repairs, and adjusts controls.

• Identify material samples and obtain treatment specifications.
• Segregate orders and materials by heat‑treat temperature and organize charges for furnace efficiency.
• Record pertinent data on appropriate forms.
• Set furnace controls to assure specified temperature, dew point, vacuum, timing, etc., and record settings.
• Load charges into furnace, set controls, and verify operation by observing instruments.
• Remove charge trays after specified time, rinse and quench or cool materials, and remove treated materials from charge trays.
• Place traveling documents with completed work orders and move to holding area.
• Heat‑treat material samples for laboratory testing and record part and processing data daily.
• Perform routine maintenance of heat‑treat equipment, drain and replenish water, oil, and solvents, and change gas and air filters.

  • Promote product safety by properly handling products
  • Be aware of counterfeit product and report suspected product when identified
• Observe company policy, safety, and security procedures.
• Perform all activities in conformance with customer requirements and UTD Quality System procedures.

• Preparing and mapping furnace loads for processing.
• Adjusting and monitoring furnace equipment controls.
• Transferring furnace loads into and out of thermal processing equipment.
• Recording and documenting the processing of materials/parts through the heat‑treating department.
• Reporting equipment malfunctions and repairs needed to the appropriate authority.
• Operating scale removal/surface finishing equipment to finalize surface finish upon completion of the heat‑treating process.
• Repacking heat‑treated parts for further processing.

• Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
• Ability to perform repetitive motion (rotating wrists, keyboarding, using small/large tools).
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to tolerate constant noise (machine motors).
• Ability to work safely in the presence of hazardous chemicals and hazardous conditions.
• Ability to follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
• Vision abilities including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in aerospace manufacturing, thermal processing, or related experience.
