Overview

The Groundskeeper 4 supports a variety of landscaping services, performing maintenance and repair duties for athletic fields, golf courses, campus landscapes, and surrounding properties. This role operates under the direction of a supervisor or master gardener and involves estimating and procuring materials, tools, and supplies, ensuring efficient and timely job completion. The position requires a one‑year probationary period during which the employee must demonstrate competence across all seasons.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Cleans and maintains University properties which include litter picking, trash and debris removal, sweeping sidewalks and courtyards, snow removal, leaf removal, mulching, mowing, other general landscaping maintenance, uses hand and power equipment and tools.
  • Performs maintenance for the Golf Course such as mowing of tees, greens, approaches, fairways, and roughs with specialized mowing equipment, maintaining grass and sand bunkers, changing and setting tee marker and putting green pins, seeding, top dressing, aerating, fertilizing, and spraying under the guidance of the greens keeping superintendent.
  • Performs all duties required in the maintaining of athletic facilities such as layout, marking and maintenance of athletic fields, tennis courts, track, and polo fields under the guidance of a LG6 Groundskeeper or higher Labor Grade.
  • Installs plant material, trees, shrubs, sod, lawns, and other planting material as assigned and directed.
  • Weeds, mulches, rakes, and waters properties; prunes annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees using the appropriate techniques.
  • Planting using the appropriate techniques under direction of LG11 Master Gardener or Supervisor.
  • Operates power equipment such as, but not limited to, mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, turfvacs, chain saws, snowblowers and tractor/loaders as needed.
  • Under direction, operates irrigation systems.
  • Operates, cleans and performs preventive maintenance such as greasing, checking and filling, fluids, etc. on all equipment and vehicles.
  • Paints or marks parking lots under direction of LG10 Gardener and LG11 Master Gardener.
  • Directs lower labor grades.
  • Observes all safety standards and practices at all times.
  • Reports all repairs required and safety and fire hazards to lead employee and/or supervisor.
  • Observes all rules and regulations found in the Yale University Service & Maintenance Employee Handbook & Work Rules.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned within the job classification.

    Education and Experience

    High School diploma or equivalent. 1,950 work hours as a Groundskeeper LG3 (equivalent of one year). Successful completion of probationary period. Refer to "Master Gardener Program" (MGP) for additional details.

    Required License(s) or Certification(s)

    Must possess driver’s license valid in the state of Connecticut; pass (70%) written and plant identification exam. Refer to "Master Gardener Program" (MGP) for additional details.

  • Ability to use technology such as computers, communication devises, equipment, and related software in support of required duties.

  • Physical Requirements

    Works on ladders as required by the job which may be in excess of eight (8) feet. Ability to climb and descend stairs. Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, and/or squatting.
