Opportunity

The Development & Analytical Scientist will be responsible for a hybrid role encompassing: designing, developing, executing, and validating analytical methods in conjunction with quality/analytical team to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of our food and supplement products. Supporting the development, assay, and stability evaluation of new fluid bed and spray dried encapsulation projects for R&D. This role reports to R&D and includes frequent cross-functional work with Quality Control and Regulatory teams to support product development, validation, and compliance.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities are divided into two categories: development and analytical.

  • Analytical Responsibilities
    • Develop, optimize, and validate analytical methods for detection and quantification of active ingredients and other components in food and supplement matrices to support new R&D innovations.
    • Conduct laboratory experiments and analyses using chromatographic and spectrophotometric techniques such as HPLC, UV-VIS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, and other relevant instruments.
    • Perform sample preparation, method validation, and stability studies.
    • Analyze data and prepare technical reports, documentation, and regulatory submissions.
    • Ensure laboratory compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards (e.g., GMP, GLP, ISO).
  • Development Responsibilities
    • Understand the basic operational principles of fluid beds and spray dryers and the circumstances where one would be preferable to the other.
    • Document lab records to create historical references and track processing changes between batches.
    • Have a basic understanding of bulk densities and calculating batch sizes.
    • Calculate ingredient weights from a formula and prepare common solutions (including heated solutions) and filter when necessary.
    • Proper assembly on fluid bed equipment, including outlet filter selection/installation, nozzle and wand assembly (including insulation), and setting up spraying from scale or hot plate with a scale.
    • Understand physical testing procedures including free flow, tapped density, particle size distribution (stacked sieve, air jet, Malvern), and Loss On Drying.
    • Collaborate with R&D, Quality, and Production to scale the product up into production.
    • Educate the production team on key operating and testing parameters of new products.
    • Recommend improvements to fluid bed and spray dryer productivity, efficiency, quality, and safety.
    • Learn operating basics and formulation functions in PDM, SAP, and C4C.
    • Create a fluid bed or spray drying batch record for lab and pilot equipment from a template.
Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in R&D analytical method development and validation, preferably within the food or supplement industry.
  • Experience in new product development of food & supplement ingredients.
  • Strong knowledge of analytical instrumentation and laboratory techniques.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with regulatory requirements such as FDA, EFSA, or other international standards.
  • Knowledge of food matrix complexities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
