Material Handler, General Labor
Summary
This position will be responsible for loading, unloading, and moving materials within or near plant, yard, or work site.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Use hand‑held bar‑coding units and understand all functions required in the bar‑coding process.
- Read work orders or follow oral instructions to determine materials or pallets to be moved or pulled for shipment.
- Load and unload materials onto or from tractor trailers.
- Load pallets onto trucks and inspect strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
- Verify materials loaded or unloaded against work orders or bills of lading.
- Convey materials from storage or work sites to designated areas.
- Make partial racks when necessary to complete shipping orders.
- Organize and randomly inspect inventory on the yard.
- Operate industrial trucks or electric hoists safely and accurately to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
- Train and mentor lower‑level loaders.
- Follow safety procedures during loading and strapping loads.

Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent and at least nine months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates and/or Licenses- Fork Lift Certification
- CDL‑A (for drivers)
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Safety/Total Housekeeping Management (THM)Perform all work safely, maintain designated work spaces in a clean, safe, and timely manner, and comply with the plant’s THM/Safety policy.
Physical DemandsRegular use of hands and fingers; ability to talk and hear; occasional sitting; frequent standing, walking, lifting, and moving up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is a shipping yard with year‑round exposure to weather, fumes, airborne particles, and moving mechanical parts. Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions and loud noise levels are typical. Proper personal protective equipment is worn as required.
