Position: Head Coach, Cross Country

The Head Coach, Cross Country performs coaching responsibilities necessary to administer all aspects of a comprehensive, highly competitive cross country athletic program at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Under general supervision the position is responsible for hiring assistant coach(es), scheduling, developing budgets, recruiting, ordering equipment etc.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs tasks using established methods, principles, concepts, and procedures related to professional and management issues in the coaching specialized field. Judgments are made on routine matters of relatively small impact. Acts in consulting capacity with Athletic Director.
  • Oversees all components of a highly competitive community college cross country program including coaching and developing players’ cross country skills and techniques and developing game strategies and plays.
  • Acts in a professional, ethical manner by adhering to NJCAA, SLCC and athletic policies and procedures in all situations and circumstances.
  • Monitors academic and team members’ academic and eligibility progress and success, conduct and discipline according to requirements set by the NJCAA, Region 18, SWAC and SLCC.
  • Ensures compliance with all SLCC, Region 18, SWAC and NJCAA policies, rules and regulations concerning financial aid, recruiting and eligibility of student-athletes.
  • Manages budget, practice organization, scheduling, scouting, sport camps, team supervision, strength and conditioning programs, travel plans and arrangements, coordination and supervision of assistant(s), consultation and monitoring of athletes.
  • Handles athletic injuries and works within the established training/medical, OSHA, risk management and insurance procedures.
  • Oversees and assists with the management of accurate statistical records.
  • In accordance with institutional policies and procedures – purchase, store, clean, issue and maintain equipment and supplies as required.
  • Participates in and support all athletic department functions and activities to include but not limited to fundraisers, promotional function, etc.
  • Recruits’ quality student-athletes necessary to meet SLCC goals and philosophies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Evaluation and recruiting of cross country players.
  • Understanding and implementing winning coaching strategies.
  • Knows fundamental concepts, practices, skills and procedures of a comprehensive, highly competitive Community College athletic program.
  • Needs assistance with administrative, managerial concepts and practices.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA conference, region rules and regulations.
  • Strong record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to counsel and motivate athletes.
  • Current cross country skills, techniques, strategies and rules, strength conditioning and sports psychology at the collegiate level.
  • Athletic training techniques, Risk Management, OSHA, Exposure Control procedures preferred.
  • Ability to organize, manage, supervise and administer a collegiate cross country program.
  • Experience in recruiting student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of human behavior, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Deal effectively with student-athletes, staff, administrators and faculty.
  • Experience in budget management preferred.
  • Perform fundamental coaching responsibilities effectively under stress.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two (2) years direct, paid, full-time cross country coaching experience in NJCAA or NCAA.
    * Certified professional level experience considered.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Four (4) + years of NJCAA and NCAA experience.
