District Nurse - District Office

This position is for the  School Year.


Overview of Position:

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students. School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety, including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

Responsibilities/Duties:

In accordance with the standards of school nursing practice and Oregon nurse practice act, implement appropriate use of the nursing process to plan and provide individualized nursing care in the school community, including nursing delegation and training for anticipated emergencies.

  • Manage delivery of school health services, including health screenings, communicable disease control, health education, and environmental monitoring;
  • Attain and integrate evidence-based knowledge and clinical competency, including appropriate technology and service delivery;
  • Collaborate with students, families, school staff, school nurse colleagues, and other pertinent professionals and community members to maximize academic potential;
  • Act as a liaison to facilitate resource access and utilization by the school, student, and family to meet safety, health, and educational needs;
  • Promote a healthy school environment by providing Emergency Response Team (ERT) training, including CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogen, and administration of injectable emergency medications;
  • Monitor immunizations for compliance with state laws and school policies;
  • Adhere to the jurisdiction of both the Clackamas County Health Department and WLWV School District to monitor and report communicable diseases as required by law;
  • Oversee non-nursing staff in managing medical records, health room visits, and medication management;
  • Maintain accurate, appropriate, and confidential medical records;
  • Serve on advisory committees and provide consultation for health accommodations necessary to support student individual education plans (e.g., 504 and IEP).

  • Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of applicable laws and nursing practice regulations and standards;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Organization, leadership, and time management skills;
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively within the Health Services Team;
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for use on the job;
  • Proficiency in navigating internal and external data systems, including data entry and report production relevant to school health services;
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties;
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently with high accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.

  • Educational Requirements:

    • Unencumbered and current Oregon license to practice as a Registered Nurse;
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification;
    • Experience with computer systems;
    • BSN/BS in a health-related field.
