Job Overview

The Advanced Practice Nurse Lead leads the Wound Care Department at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. The APN coordinates nursing care and practice, wound care activities and aligns with the hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures and program plans. The role evaluates the appropriateness of wound consult patients, coordinates care, patient education and follow‑up, and acts as a liaison with physicians and other health care team members.

The leader participates in house‑wide skin/wound care programs for staff education and patient care, including prevalence and competency days, and develops unit PI. The APN also provides age‑specific treatment and care using growth and development principles.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Current license as a registered professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.
  • Certification by the New Jersey Board of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Certified Wound Ostomy and Continence preferred.
  • Completion of a UHMS‑Designated Introductory course in Hyperbaric Medicine within 6 months of hire.
Experience
  • Two to five years relevant clinical experience.
Essential Functions
  • Manages the Outpatient Ostomy Clinic.
  • Assists with administrative duties of the department including daily schedule maintenance, payroll, monitoring/editing of billing, performance evaluations, interviews, OPPE/FPPE, training new employees, staff education, monitoring staff files (current licensure, certifications, etc.), employee counseling, inventory and ordering of supplies, and acts as a department representative to hospital committees.
  • Serves as Department Director designee when necessary.
  • Assists with department improvement projects, including creation of educational manuals, annual skill days, and facilitating educational sessions with specialists.
  • Conducts staff meetings, supervises staff, and maintains knowledge of the institutional strategic plan and future vision and communicates that information to staff.
  • Reviews and revises scope of service and participates in joint planning and program development with all health care team members.
  • Acts as a role model in customer relations, assessing and responding to patient and family satisfaction information.
  • Coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support those services.
  • Determines qualification and competence of department personnel who provide patient care services.
  • Oversees appropriate credentialing and privileging of team members.
  • Ensures appropriate APN joint protocol development and annual revision.
  • Assures competence of nurses through development of orientation, training and continuing education.
  • Develops outreach program to expand wound care referral base and maintain current referral relationships, and assists with marketing of the Wound Care team.
  • Provides outreach education to referring facilities.
  • Acts as a liaison and coordinates continuity of care of burn and wound management patients from admission to discharge and follow‑up with other members of the health care team.
  • Serves as a resource person for other nursing staff to expand skills and knowledge related to wound treatment; provides house‑wide wound care education, instructs at nursing competency day and participates in specialty bed selection.
  • Adheres to infection control practices and wound‑care policies, using standard precautions for all patient encounters.
  • Assists in developing protocols and standards related to the needs of wound/ostomy patients, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Coordinates data collection and tracking related to treatment of wound/ostomy patients.
  • Educates new hires during orientation (e.g., equipment, supplies, products).
  • Maintains role as patient advocate, ensuring patient satisfaction and reporting complaints to appropriate nursing management personnel.
