Minimum QualificationsSUMMARY:
Under general supervision, is responsible for design and inspection of interior office space and learns to manage office space planning and construction; and performs related work as required.
- Designs layout of interior space of State office buildings; identifies working relationships of individuals and functions within organizations; assigns agency units to the specific space available; uses computer aided design system (CAD) to identify major architectural features and layout the proposed location of operating units; produces drawings, notes, and other documentation depicting items that require construction or interface with the building and detail movable items;
discusses plans with user agency to reach agreement on allocated space and make modifications to plans as necessary. - Assists in coordinating project activities in accordance with design plans; identifies source of supply for goods and services that must be procured; compiles a list of specifications, quantities, and costs for goods and services so that purchase orders may be issued; oversees delivery of goods and services and installation of furniture, equipment, and other contracted services.
- Gathers information on worker and functional relationships to determine specific departmental shared needs and specific individual space needs; examines survey sheets completed by users to obtain information about space requirements; observes and documents user agency operations at existing facilities; consults with agency management to confirm space requirements and gain information on organizational objectives.
- Assists in the inspection of facilities for specific project phases; searches files to obtain existing plans or drawings; contacts building owners or managers to obtain plans or drawings; schedules inspections with all parties involved (e.g., lessor, real estate staff, trade people, user agency).
- Assists in scheduling the sequence, duration, and timing of tasks necessary to complete a particular project; identifies the discreet tasks, time constraints, and requirements associated with a project; assigns a chronological sequence, duration, and timing to each project activity; assigns project tasks to contractors, vendors, designers, and others involved in completing the project; ensures schedules are met by coordinating the activities of the resources assigned to project;
tracks, updates, and modifies schedules when necessary. - Learns to develop project budgets identifying the costs associated with each component of work; determines the manpower and materials necessary to complete project tasks; calculates unit costs of materials and services (e.g., furniture/equipment, movers, construction materials and labor, design services, telecommunications costs); writes justification of estimated total project costs for approval of project funds; tracks and approves expenditures as components of work are completed.
- Inspects work of outside contractors to ensure that plans specifications and instructions are followed; examines samples from vendors to determine whether they meet specifications; assists in providing schedules, drawings, and other instructions to contractors building or designing a project.
- Gathers information for type and amount of space needed for a project; assists in examining documents such as leases, worksheets, and drawings to identify parameters of facilities; makes on site visits to observe and document space condition and utilization; records all information gathered in database file.
Education and Experience:
Education equivalent to a bachelor's degree in interior design, architecture, environmental design, graphic design, industrial engineering, facility management, construction technology, or architectural technology from an accredited college or university.
