Utility Technician
This is skilled work in the operation of deep well injection and supply systems, leachate collection systems, lift stations and power generation and distribution, electronic and mechanical instrumentation and control panels, pump and motor maintenance, landfill gas collection and disposal systems and other assigned utilities.
This position requires initiative, accountability, integrity, and reliability in all aspects of the defined role. This position reports to the Supervisor of Utility Operations and is required to work weekends and holidays due to a 24-hour operation.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Operates utilities plant control room.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates all instrumentation related to the operation.
- Performs field and laboratory tests for control of various utility systems requiring walking and/or standing on uneven or sloped terrain.
- Operates utility systems to comply with all requirements of various permits issued by the state and local regulatory agencies.
- Keeps accurate records and test results to comply with all requirements of various permits issued by state and local regulatory agencies.
- Performs shift work due to 24-hour operation including weekends and holidays.
- Performs related work as required.

- Demonstrated knowledge of utilities plant operation and maintenance procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions involved in the operation and maintenance of utility systems.
- Demonstrate ability to keep accurate records and generate reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English to understand and interpret instructional materials such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to respond to inquiries and write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to calculate figures, measure and apply concepts of basic algebra.
- Ability to deal with problems in a logical manner not to impede the Authority’s operation or sacrifice safety issues.
- Ability to maintain a safe, healthy, and clean work area.
- Ability to work 24/7 schedule with a 4/10-hour day shift with overtime as needed.
- Ability to learn all other in-house training, practices, and policies of the Authority.
The ideal candidate possess the education and experience listed below.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of three (3) years in one of more of the following fields or equivalent areas:
Electrical, Electronics, pump repair and maintenance, plumbing and lift station operation. - Any combination of experience, education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Valid Florida Driver’s license required.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
This position is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment with travel from site to site;
exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions, grease, noise, and dust; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; may be required to work weekends, nights, and be available for emergency call out duty. This position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.
