Position Summary

This role provides social services to assist in the rehabilitation of juvenile law offenders in custody or on probation or parole. Incumbents recommend actions involving formulation of rehabilitation plans and treatment of offenders, including conditional release, education, and employment stipulations.

Job Description Case Management, Referrals, Recommendations, and Assessment
  • Initiate contact with youth, family, victims, and law enforcement upon referral receipt from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ).
  • Conduct home and school visits to gather information and involve families.
  • Obtain and review collateral information such as abuse/neglect history, educational, mental health, substance use, gang activity, and other relevant data from involved agencies.
  • Conduct and document FDJJ screening(s) to identify risk and needs, protective factors, and needs for further evaluations, including detention, intake, and suicide risk screenings.
  • Formulate case management strategies based on assessments to address specific youth and family needs.
  • Make service referrals and follow up on actions needed.
  • Recommend supervision and treatment to the State Attorney and judicial partners.
  • Complete screening instruments and reports used by the department and courts, including the Detention Screening Risk Assessment, Suicide Risk Screening Instrument, and other approved instruments.
Court Process
  • Represent DJJ during court hearings to support recommendations for youth, family, and community.
  • Prepare and maintain current social histories, court reports, referral letters, and related correspondence.
  • Testify at hearings when appropriate.
  • Prepare affidavits/petitions for violation of probation and file delinquency petitions.
  • Request hearings when appropriate.
Case Management, Interventions & Supervision
  • Complete risk and needs assessments using approved instruments for all supervised youth.
  • Conduct face‑to‑face contacts in homes, schools, and community settings, including during non‑traditional hours.
  • Maintain communication with all parties throughout the youth’s involvement.
  • Assist youth in obtaining mental health and substance abuse evaluations and referrals.
  • Assist with school enrollment and maintain school contact.
  • Provide crisis intervention and referrals to crisis services.
  • Support youth in establishing personal goals and provide ongoing support.
  • Discuss projected timelines for goal completion, sanctions, and supervision termination.
  • Respond to concerns, needs, and risks; staff cases, plans, or violations with unit supervisor.
  • Conduct staffing and transition/exit planning, including post‑residential referrals.
Records Management
  • Enter all case management activities into the Juvenile Justice Information System (JJIS).
  • Upload required forms and documents into the JJIS case file.
Community Collaboration
  • Familiarize with community resources and provide input on service delivery and program development.
  • Attend professional development trainings and meetings.
  • Follow all departmental policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of case management practices and interviewing/counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer programs.
  • Ability to make recommendations concerning the processing and handling of delinquent youth.
  • Ability to develop case plans and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to determine work priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with community and judicial partners.
  • Independent decision‑making based on individual analysis and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience working directly with adolescents in criminal justice, social services, or education.
