Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse is assigned to the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center - West Plains Community Clinic (CBOC). The nurse functions as a team member under the supervision of the Nurse Manager.

Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the NLNAC at the time the program was completed by the applicant - Licensure:
Full active current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia - An LPN who has or has ever had any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with VA policy
- English Language Proficiency:
Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d) - Grandfathering Provision:
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria) - Grade Determinations: GS-3 (None beyond the basic requirements)
- GS-4:
Appointment at GS-4 may be made if any of the criteria in the notice are met (e.g., six months of qualifying experience as an LPN/LVN; graduation with additional qualifying experience; or graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months) - GS-5:
Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at GS-4 or equivalent; demonstrated ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care; orientation and training of less experienced staff; patient education; documentation and medication administration; emergency response; and collaboration with the nursing team - GS-6:
At least one year of additional qualifying experience at GS-5 level; technical proficiency in nursing care; ability to carry out patient care based on condition; administration of prescribed medications; recognition of urgent or emergent situations; and fostering patient-centered care - Additional responsibilities include precepting, ongoing education, and use of electronic health records

- The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected ranges from GS-3 to GS-6.
- Complete nursing tasks age/era appropriate for the Veteran and document care and the patient’s response
- Seeks assistance from RN or MD/DO for changes in the patient’s condition requiring higher-level intervention
- Assist in orientation and competency validation of students, peers, and clerical staff
- Advocate for patient and family rights; protect patient privacy and dignity
- Complete mandatory reviews to promote patient self-management toward an individualized life plan of care
- Support patient-driven care in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner using evidence-based principles
- Provide nursing care to appropriate patient populations and document actions and patient responses
- Recognize and respond to equipment issues, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies
- Operate under general supervision of an RN or MD/DO
- Maintain broad working knowledge of practical nursing procedures and contribute to a team-based care environment
