The Health Information Director is responsible for managing all aspects of health information services, including resident chart maintenance, record accuracy, privacy compliance, and coordination with clinical staff to ensure documentation meets state, federal, and facility standards. This role plays a key part in supporting quality resident care and ensuring the facility remains compliant with HIPAA and regulatory guidelines.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the organization, maintenance, and confidentiality of all resident health records.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of medical records in compliance with federal, state, and facility regulations.
- Monitor and audit documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Serve as the facility’s HIPAA Privacy Officer and maintain privacy/confidentiality standards.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support documentation and care planning needs.
- Prepare and submit required reports, audits, and data for internal and external review.
- Train and support staff on proper documentation and confidentiality procedures.
- Manage record requests, releases of information, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred. - RHIT, RHIA, or similar certification preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical records or health information management, preferably in long-term care or skilled nursing.
- Strong knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare documentation standards.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills (experience with EHR systems preferred).
- Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Supervise Health Unit Coordinators.
