About the Position of Principal

The MVRHS Principal will be responsible for the instructional program, professional and support staff evaluations, budget development and implementation, as well as maintaining a visible presence with students, parents, and the broader community. MVRHS seeks an effective team builder and dedicated community leader who is committed to students, passionate about the school’s mission, and champions the culture, as evidenced by the following:

  • Effective team builder: Demonstrated experience developing teachers and staff through coaching and mentoring. Invests in professional development opportunities and cultivates a collaborative working model. Successfully recruits and retains high-quality educators and staff. Ensures that all teachers and staff are well supported with the resources they need to be productive in their roles. Highly transparent with strong communication skills.
  • Dedicated community leader: Cultivates long‑term partnerships with the MVRHS campus neighbors and across the Island. Actively manages initiatives that deliver shared impact. Serves as a unifier.
  • Committed to students: Genuinely enjoys being with students. Greets them daily, maintains an open‑door policy, and is present in the classroom. Has a welcoming, kind personality. Gets to know individual students and their families.
  • Passionate about the school’s mission: Enthusiastic about the school’s student learning program and fosters a love of learning and community. Skilled educator with deep curriculum knowledge.
  • Champions the culture: Leads with inclusivity and actively supports diverse populations. Understands the unique setting and needs of the Island’s six towns. Prioritizes the maintenance of town traditions while creating new ones.

The principal of MVRHS will be the educational administrator and manager of the school and will supervise the operation and management of the school and school property, subject to the supervision and direction of the Superintendent. In accordance with district personnel policies, applicable statutes and budgetary parameters, and subject to the approval of the Superintendent, the MVRHS Principal will be responsible for the employment decisions regarding all teachers, instructional or administrative aides, and other personnel assigned to the school.

Through the application of administrative leadership, management, and supervisory skills the principal will organize and provide a learning environment conducive to the maximum educational growth of each learner.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess strong leadership and communication skills. Classroom experience is desirable, and at least three years of experience as a school administrator is preferred. A valid Massachusetts license as a 9‑12 Principal and a master’s degree in education or related field are required. Residence on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard is required.

Compensation

Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools offers a regionally competitive salary (in the range of $175,000‑$190,000) and benefits package commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Timeline
