Able Ship Assistant

Overview

ESVAGT has over 1100 seafarers employed on our 43 vessels. All vessels have permanent crews, who have professional pride and a good relation to each other. We have Able Ship Assistants on all our vessels. You can read more about the different type of ships here. Your qualifications determine which vessel group you are offered a job in. Therefore, please remember to state your previous experience and your certificates in the application.

The work tasks as Able Ship Assistant are varied. The main tasks are to be a part of the emergency preparedness, but also to contribute to a clean vessel and a tidy workspace. It means there will be a lot of maintenance work in form of painting and cleaning. Also, you must take an active part in the many exercises every week – including firefighting, first aid and FRB Sailing.

Some vessels do not have a cook on board, so here you will also be responsible for the galley.

• Certificate as Able Ship Assistant
• Valid certificates for Basic Maritime Safety (A-VI /1-1) and firefighting in ships (STCW A-VI /1-2)
• Valid Certificate of proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats (A-VI/2-1)
• Designated Security Personnel certificate (STCW VI /6-4)
• Valid health certificate for seafarers and passport.
• Clean drug-test (Zero tolerance for narcotics and alcohol on board)
• You must be able to show a criminal record that is not older than 3 months

• Practical experience as Able Ship Assistant or previous experience from ESVAGT
• A good approach to working safely at sea
• Ability to perform in the galley if needed
• Possibility for sailing four weeks in a row (2 persons share a position)

• Certificate of Proficiency in Sailing (Merchant ships)
• ROC
• Certificate of Medical Care on board ships equipped with ship’s medicine chest C
• Experience from Stand By, Wind, Supply
