Our highly regarded specialist team works with clients on all aspects of the administration of trusts. We remove the stress of completing annual accounts, tax returns, HMRC compliance and dealing with day‑to‑day requests from beneficiaries for funds.
The RoleWe are looking for a Solicitor with at least five years post‑qualification experience to join our Trusts and Tax team to administer a portfolio of trusts for our longstanding clients. You will collaborate with our Private Client lawyers and Ashtons Legal Trust Corporation directors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Administering a portfolio of trusts on behalf of new and longstanding clients, including annual accounts and tax returns
- Legal drafting of documents in relation to:
- Retirement and appointments of Trustees
- Advances to beneficiaries
- Winding up of trusts
- Preparing and submitting the annual declarations on the Trust Registration Service
- Preparing and submitting FATCA and CRS returns, where necessary
- Hosting the annual Trustees Meeting to review the trust investments with the IFA and Trustees
- Preparing the inheritance tax forms and calculations for all Relevant Property Trusts
- Undertaking day‑to‑day administration of the trusts, including communicating with beneficiaries and handling requests for financial support
Ideally you will have the following skills and experience:
- At least five years post‑qualification experience in administering Trusts
- A basic understanding of Personal Tax Returns
- Inheritance tax, capital gains tax and CGT 60‑day knowledge
- Indication of STEP qualification (not essential)
- Experience in preparing trust accounts and tax returns
- Experience dealing with professional intermediaries, trustees and beneficiaries
- Clear understanding of the compliance requirements for trusts
- Experience liaising with HMRC on behalf of trustees and beneficiaries
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal processes clearly to clients
- Strong relationship‑building experience with trustees and beneficiaries
- Experience training, developing and mentoring junior team members
- Willingness to attend business development activities on behalf of the team and firm
This is a hybrid position, but we would like you to attend our Bury St Edmunds office twice a week to work with the rest of the Trusts and Tax team.
