Museum and Collector Resource, LLC (MCR), is seeking an Archivist for a 12-month, renewable position.

Position Summary

MCR is seeking an Archivist to perform a wide variety of professional library and archival duties in support of a Greater Boston area medical institution. The incumbent will primarily manage the arrangement, description and digitization of institutional and historical archival collections, perform provenance research on library and archival materials, as well as data entry for the archives, library and a small number of artifacts.

This individual will perform complex assignments requiring independent judgment and actions as well as working as part of team. Team members include MCR staff, institutional employees, volunteers, and contractors. The ideal candidate will possess an interest in the history of science, experience with library work and an aptitude for database management with a high degree of attention to detail. The Archivist will serve as MCR’s representative on site for presentations and interactions with the client.

This is a full-time, temporary position, for 12 months with the possibility of renewal.

Most work will take place in Westborough, MA, however, additional work may be needed in Cambridge and Boston, MA and Windsor, CT. As such, the candidate will need reliable transportation. 10% of the work may be performed remotely. Opportunity for domestic travel to other states may also be available.

Responsibilities
  • Appraises, arranges and describes archival materials.
  • Enters data into the Past Perfect collections management database.
  • Conducts quality control checks of data.
  • Acts as the primary resource on archival issues for the project: answers internal queries regarding the collections and the activities of the project.
  • Conducts provenance research on library, archival, and material culture items.
  • Creates presentations for meetings and presents at meetings.
  • Creates finding aids.
  • Digitizes archival documents and photographs and some 3-dimensional artifacts.
  • Catalogues and digitizes some library materials.
  • Coordinates work with the client institution and other MCR staff.
  • Writes reports.
  • Moves library and archival materials and boxes in support of the project.
  • Ensures that the work areas are clean and neat.
  • Provides specifications for supply orders as needed.
  • Tracks supply and equipment budgets.
  • Conducts research.
  • Makes order out of chaos in sometimes dusty and cluttered conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Master’s degree in library, archives or information science required.
  • Previous archival experience required, which can include an internship of over 400 hours.
  • Minimum of 1 year of staff supervision experience required.
  • Experience with Past Perfect collections management database a plus.
  • 2+ years of library or archives experience preferred.
  • Experience using HOLLIS and Library Research Systems highly preferred.

    • Excellent computer skills including experience with Excel and at least one archival collections management system.
