The Assistant Category Manager supports the Category Manager in maximizing sales growth and profitability. Responsibilities include vendor and item setup and maintenance, sales data analysis, and effective communication of category initiatives to internal and external teams. A service‑oriented mindset is critical.
Responsibilities- Category item management: obtain vendor and item information for forecasting; maintain item data in PDI, Focal Point, D365, Power
BI, and Smart Sheets. - New vendor set‑up.
- Item setup and changes.
- Rebate set‑up.
- Monitor inventory levels at WDC & McLane.
- Track McLane purchase orders.
- Gap reporting on category items.
- Update vendor database and annual vendor planning agreements.
- Analytics & reporting: create, update, maintain, and distribute category‑specific sales reports.
- Analyze data and promotional impact.
- Assist in category review preparation.
- Monitor POG performance (item and set size).
- Coordinate resets and promotional activity.
- Repair item scanning issues and service calls.
- Communicate to the retail field team through MyWork messages and the New & Discontinued Bulletin.
- Coordinate communication on service‑related matters and procedural issues to the vendor community.
- Follow up with the DSD vendor community on service issues, delivery procedures, and inventory concerns.
- Provide phone and email support to the Store Operations Group.
- Supply‑chain and inventory management collaboration.
- Review and monitor inventory reports from McLane and WDC.
- Partner with Marketing Operations on item forces and field distribution.
- Other duties as assigned by the Category Manager.
Internally:
Marketing (Advertising, POS/Price Book, Merchandising/Planogram), Store Support Center (IT, Legal, Strategic Sourcing, Finance, Supply Chain/Warehouse), Retail Operations (VPs, Regional and District Managers, Store Managers). Externally:
Direct vendors, brokers, and distributors.
- Minimum Education: High School or GED
- Preferred Education: Associate’s Degree in business, marketing, or related field
- Minimum Experience: Strong computer skills; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; aptitude to quickly learn in‑house systems
- Preferred Experience: Strong analytical and organizational skills

Consistent with Massachusetts Pay Transparency Law, we’re sharing the base salary range for this position. Final pay within this range will be based on your skills, experience, and qualifications.
