Master Heat Pump Installer
Horizon Homes | Westbrook, ME | Full-time | $36–$52/hour
Horizon Homes is Maine's whole home-performance contractor — insulation, air sealing, cold-climate heat pumps, and high-efficiency boilers, all under one roof. We run about 700 energy assessments a year, which means our techs walk into homes where we already know what the building is doing. We're hiring a Master-licensed technician who can install heat pumps.
Why this job is differentMost HVAC shops sell a bigger system when the house is the problem. We don't. We tighten and insulate the envelope first, then right-size the equipment — so the systems you install actually perform the way the manual says they will. You'll spend less time chasing comfort complaints that were never an equipment problem to begin with.
We're a ~20-person, owner-led company in Westbrook. No call center, no corporate script, no commission pressure to oversell a homeowner. You'll know everyone you work with by name.
This is a senior seat. At the Master level you're not just running your own calls — you're the license that lets our crews grow, and you'll have a real say in how the division runs.
What you do- Install (about half the job)
- Install cold-climate ductless mini-splits and ducted heat pump systems — line sets, condensate, electrical coordination, mounts, and a clean finish the homeowner is happy to look at
- Pull vacuums, weigh in charge, pressure-test, and commission systems to manufacturer spec
- Install high-efficiency heat pump water heaters
- Work alongside our insulation and air sealing crews on whole-house projects
- Supervise and sign off on journeyman and apprentice work
- Mentor the techs coming up behind you — we promote from the inside
- Document the job in Company Cam and keep your paperwork straight
- Work safely and keep your crew safe: PPE, ladders, confined spaces, combustion, electrical
- EPA Section 608 certification
- 5+ years of residential HVAC experience, including hands-on mini-split or ducted heat pump installation
- Valid Maine driver's license and a clean driving record
- Comfortable working in basements, attics, and crawlspaces, and on ladders
- Able to explain a diagnosis to a homeowner in plain English, and be trusted in their home
Close to your Master and ready to sit for the exam? Talk to us anyway. We'll pay for the path.
Nice to have- Both oil and gas/propane licenses
- Heat pump manufacturer training (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin)
- Experience with combustion analysis and blower-door/building-science work
- NATE certification
- Prior experience in a home-performance or weatherization company
- $36–$52/hour, based on license and experience
- Overtime at time-and-a-half over 40 hours
- Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM. No nights, no weekends
- No on-call rotation. We don't run one. Your nights and weekends are your own
- Health, dental, and vision insurance after 60 days
- 401(k) after one year
- Paid time off and 7 paid holidays
- Bi-weekly pay
- Take-home Transit van. It goes home with you — no depot commute on your own time, no punching in at the yard. We keep the fleet maintained
- Tools provided. You're not buying your way into this job
- Work-life balance. A van that goes home with you, tools you dont buy, and no on-call means several thousand dollars a year back in your pocket — on top of the hourly, not instead of it
- Ongoing paid training — manufacturer certifications and license advancement
- Year-round work. Heating season, cooling season, and a weatherization business behind us when HVAC is slow
- A real safety program with a dedicated safety manager, not a binder nobody opens
We hire for reliability and character first. The people who last here show up, own their work, tell the truth when something goes sideways, and treat a customer's home like it's their mother's. If that's you and you hold the license, we want to talk.
