The Department of Theological Studies invites highly qualified applicants for new teaching positions in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University to begin Fall semester, 2026. Initial appointments will be for two years. Successful candidates, upon review, will be eligible for renewable three-year contracts. Appointments are not eligible for tenure. The new hires will offer Theological Studies courses in fulfillment of the University’s Core Curriculum, hold weekly office hours, and join in regular cohort workshops with others in these positions.
The Department seeks applicants who demonstrate potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching, a focused commitment to developing student reading and writing capacities as part of an intellectually rigorous education in the humanities, and an interest in the educational mission that animates a Jesuit/Catholic liberal arts higher education. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student and community populations.
Discipline and field are open, and we invite candidates of all backgrounds, life experiences, and beliefs to apply. Applicants should have a PhD in the relevant field; ABDs will also be considered. Successful candidates will be expected to teach three courses (usually two course preparations) per semester. This includes lower-division courses in the core area of Theological Inquiry as well as upper-division courses in the core area of Faith & Reason.
The exploration of enduring questions, as taken up in religious thought and practice, with careful attention to primary sources and the teaching of specific religious texts, is a central focus in the Department’s core course offerings. Areas of instruction may include: comparative religion/theology; religious art and architecture; history of spirituality;
Catholic theology–including historical, Latinx, practical, and systematic; ethics;
American and indigenous religions; history of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, or Islam in pre-modern to contemporary times; as well as Greek, Roman, Egyptian, or Near Eastern religions. 1) a cover letter (outlining area of expertise, teaching interests, and resonance with LMU’s mission);
2) a curriculum vitae (with contact information for three references able to provide confidential letters of recommendation upon request);
3) a statement of teaching philosophy or approach and, if applicable, teaching evaluations and/or sample syllabi; and
