The Staff Civil Engineer will provide technical leadership to project teams working on planning, evaluation, design and implementation of civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will lead the study-phase and/or design-phase of projects related to civil, environmental, construction and industrial fields. The staff civil engineer is expected to manage assigned co-ops/interns, represent the Company and the department professionally, interact with employees outside of their department and with clients, and have an intermediate level of software knowledge of at least two engineering software packages.
This role does not require a Professional Engineering license.
- Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs and modifications.
- Uses design software and drawing tools to render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary improvements related to the assigned project.
- Sets design specifications by computing engineering requirements (e.g., water flow rates, traffic demand, earthwork balance).
- Plans projects based on analysis of materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic/topographical data.
- Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as detention reports and engineering due diligence.
- Performs calculations for materials, equipment, and labor to determine probable construction cost.
- Collaborates with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure projects progress properly.
- Collaborates with surveyors to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors affecting construction.
- Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications and standards are met.
- Educates and explains methodologies used by the company to others.
- Participates in appropriate meetings, association memberships, and events to develop networking contacts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Civil Engineering Degree (or related)
- Minimum 2 consecutive years of Civil Engineering experience
- Public speaking ability, desired
- Execute basic design projects from start to finish as the primary designer
- Develop baseline knowledge of state and local regulations
- Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools
- Proficient in CAD and other design, data recording, and analytical software
- Understanding of materials, methods, and tools for construction or repair of site and transportation infrastructure
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Creative and analytical thinking
- Extremely detail-oriented and accurate
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
- Must be able to travel to various project sites
- Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas
