RN, Registered Nurse - First Assist (RNFA)

Position PurposeThe Registered Nurse (RN) within the scope of the Ohio Nurse Practice Act will provide care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. The RN collaborates in the spirit of teamwork and is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process within the standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines of the Organization. The expanded functions unique to the RN First Assistant during surgical intervention include advanced surgical assisting skills such as providing exposure, tissue handling, suturing, hemostasis, and the use of surgical instruments.
Responsibilities- Provides nursing care, ensures an environment of patient safety, promotes evidence‑based practice and quality initiatives, and exhibits professionalism in nursing practice within the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®.
- Assesses and evaluates patient care for an assigned group of patients, utilizing evidence‑based practice. Collaborates with patient and family to develop and implement a plan of care that includes physical, spiritual and educational components.
- Accurately communicates pertinent information to appropriate team members in a timely manner. Keeps patient/family apprised/updated.
- Documents accurately and completely pertinent assessments, interventions and outcomes for patients in accordance with documentation standards, policies, procedures and/or guidelines.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided and documented by other licensed and unlicensed care givers as appropriate.
- Demonstrates skill in manual dexterity with surgical instrumentation, hemostasis, electrosurgery, bipolar cautery, sponging, clamping, collagen, bone wax, suturing, knot‑tying, stapling, cutting, ligating, vessel management, skin closure, sub‑cuticular closure, and securing wound drains.
- Ensures that any specialty items needed for the surgical procedure are procured and that staff is in‑service on the item.
- Stays current with all quality and safety indicators for the perioperative department.
- Graduate of a school of nursing.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Current CNOR certification.
- Completion of an RNFA course and internship that meets the criteria established by AORN for RN First Assistant programs.
- Minimum 2 years of diversified OR experience.
