General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work supervising crew members operating medium and heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of streets and sidewalks, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Streets, Grounds and Utility Maintenance Supervisor. Limited oversight is exercised over Laborer position. Work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a 1 hour lunch.

Functions
  • Leads and participates in maintenance/construction crew work.
  • Operates various equipment in repairing, installing and maintaining streets and sidewalks.
  • Works as a member of a crew when repairing or maintaining streets.
  • Grades roads and drainage ditch banks.
  • Performs landscaping duties.
  • Mows rights-of way; patches utility cut ditches.
  • Inspects equipment for proper operation and safety prior to operating.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Assists in snow and ice removal and control.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of operating heavy construction equipment principles and practices; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to read grades and stakes; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;

mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to supervise the work of crew members; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in operation of heavy motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supplemental Information

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling;

work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;

work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;

work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
