SummaryAnalyzes blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for products, projects, or services by performing the following duties.
Duties and Responsibilities- Analyze requirements, drawings, and specifications to understand the processes required to produce the parts.
- Prepare time/labor estimates for manufacturing component parts and assemblies.
- Obtain costs for materials and outside processes (heat treating, finishing, etc.).
- Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.
- Computes cost factors and prepares estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effectiveness.
- Conducts special studies to develop and establish standard hours and related cost data or effect cost reductions.
- Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
- Interfaces with other individuals in the organization to obtain support and commitment to the cost estimates.
- Organizes and manages a centralized cost estimating database and a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.
- Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
- Provides improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
- Identifies cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
- 5+ years experience as an estimator or manufacturing engineer.
- Knowledge of metals, machining, manufacturing, and welding techniques varying from simple to complex.
- Knowledge of manual machines, Boring Mills, Lathes, CNC, 3-Axis, 4-Axis, and 5-Axis - Experience with machining a variety of materials (Aluminum, Stainless, Titanium, Carbon Steels, etc.).
- Experience with geometric tolerances and close tolerance manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and understand specifications.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- BS in Engineering Discipline Preferred
- Four year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of experience in a machine shop environment, ideally as a CNC Operator or programmer
- Strong experience estimating the cost to produce machined parts - reading a blueprint, drawing, and customer specs, and figuring out exactly what itll cost to make the part including material costs, hardware, processing, testing, inspection, paint, certification requirements.
