The Westford Police Department is seeking applicants for the Civilian Traffic Control Unit to direct and control traffic to ensure the safe and orderly flow of traffic at assigned posts where road construction or other hazards may exist.

Civilian Traffic Control members are appointed annually by the Chief of Police and are considered per diem employees of the Town of Westford. Members of Civilian Traffic Control are non-sworn, unarmed, civilians and have no law enforcement authority or powers of arrest. This is a non-salary position and not eligible for benefits or covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations;
Department regulations, policies, and procedures; and procedures for directing traffic. Ability to work outside in a variety of weather and temperatures is a must.

Eligible candidates for the Civilian Traffic Control position include Retired Law Enforcement Officers, who have separated from a Massachusetts Law Enforcement Agency in good standing, Westford Fire Department employees, current or former employees of the Town of Westford who have maintained good standing with the town, active or former Civilian Traffic Control members of another law enforcement agency who have maintained good standing.

Candidates must meet and maintain the certifications and requirements set forth by the Chief of Police. Preference for selection will be made to those candidates with law enforcement and traffic control experience.

Persons who are appointed must maintain a valid driver’s license, assigned to them by the state in which they reside and must also maintain CPR Training and basic first-aid certifications annually as determined by the Chief of Police. Civilian Traffic Control members will not receive payment for attendance or reimbursement for any initial training, re-certifications, or licensing.

Civilian Traffic Control members must pass a check of criminal offender record information (CORI), and a background check as determined by the Chief of Police for suitability. No person who has been convicted of a felony shall be appointed as a Civilian Traffic Control member. A candidate may be disqualified for character clearly unsuited for police services.

Applicants must have graduated from high school or must possess an General Education Development (GED) certification, or must have served at least three (3) years in the armed forces of the United States, the last discharge or release from which must have been under honorable conditions.

Unless otherwise provided and approved by the Chief of Police, Civilian Traffic Control members shall receive initial training in traffic control. Traffic control training shall be done entirely at the employee’s expense by a qualified instructor approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Approved Flagger Certification Programs and the Chief of Police.
