Position: Instructor, English as a Second Language (ESL)

THE POSITION

Coastline College is seeking a full‑time, equity‑minded, tenure‑track faculty member in English as a Second Language (ESL) beginning Fall 2026. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of ESL. The role also includes curriculum and program development; in department, division, and college committees; leadership within the department and institution; collaboration across disciplines; leveraging student support resources; participation in ongoing professional development.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off‑campus and is subject to change as needed. COLLEGE

Coastline College serves a diverse student population of approximately 19,361 students across multiple instructional modalities, including online and in‑person formats. In the 2024‑25 academic year, the College awarded 1,225 degrees and 610 certificates while achieving strong end‑of‑term retention and course success rates.

The College’s student body reflects the dynamic racial and ethnic diversity of the region. Of enrolled students, 28.9% identify as Hispanic Latinx, 23.0% as Asian, 7.7% as Black African American, 25.3% as White, 4.2% as Two or More Races, 0.5% as American Indian Alaska Native, and 0.5% as Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander. An additional 1.5% identify as Filipino, while 25.3% of students are reported as unknown or unreported.

THE DEPARTMENT

Coastline College’s ESL Department includes both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Learning (ELL) programs.

The ESL Program provides a comprehensive, academic English program for non‑native English speakers who seek to improve skills in reading, writing, grammar, listening, and speaking. The program prepares non‑native English speakers for regular collegiate classes, college degrees, and vocational training programs. It is also suitable for those who wish to improve English language skills for employment in the United States.

The ELL Program offers courses emphasizing general life skills and highly specialized courses for non‑native English speakers who wish to improve English language skills in a non‑academic, real‑world environment.

The ESL/ELL Department is located at the Westminster‑Le‑Jao Campus.
