Responsible for the real-time operation of the Tri‑State interconnected transmission system in a safe and reliable manner. This position has the authority and responsibility to operate the Tri-State transmission system to comply with all applicable North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Regional Reliability Organization (RRO) standards. This is a shift position to cover 24 hours, 7 days per week. Responsible for the coordination of switching and outage requests with Members, other interconnected utilities, and within Tri-State.
Prepare/approve switching programs in advance of the requested date of execution and direct and coordinate routine and emergency switching including issuing clearances and other protective orders to field personnel and coordinate with interconnected utilities.
There are two positions available and the positions will be filled at one of four job grade levels:
System Operator Trainee (job grade
7);
System Operator I (job grade
8);
System Operator II (job grade
9); or Senior System Operator (job grade 10. This decision will be based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected, and Tri-State business needs at the time of hire.

Compensation
Senior System Operator Hiring Salary Range: $,000
System Operator II Hiring Salary Range: $100,000-$135,000
System Operator I Hiring Salary Range: $86,000-$116,000
System Operator Trainee Hiring Wage: $42.00 per hour. Actual compensation may vary based on work experience, education, and/or skill level.
Responsibilities
Senior System Operator duties include:
- Prepare/approve transmission switching programs in advance of the requested date of execution.
- Model all switching programs using advanced Energy Management System (EMS) simulation tools to identify and mitigate reliability issues.
- Direct and coordinate routine and emergency switching including issuing clearances and other protective orders to field personnel and coordinate with interconnected utilities.
- Coordinate routine and emergency activities with Member systems and other interconnected utilities.
- Monitor transmission system events and conditions using EMS, including line trips, system voltages, line loading, and equipment status; take actions to maintain transmission system reliability per NERC/RRO/company guidelines.
- Monitor network applications (State Estimator, Real-Time Security Analysis) for potential reliability issues and mitigate as needed.
- Develop, approve, and implement mitigations for Real-Time Transmission System emergencies.
- Perform Transmission Service Operator duties as required (validating Transmission Service Requests, e-Tags, congestion management, etc.).
- Assist with training of new employees, System Operator I & II, and Trainees as needed.
- During emergencies, coordinate and execute decisions to restore load and generation balance and provide emergency assistance as required to ensure system reliability (NERC/FERC Standards of Conduct).
- Perform Senior System Operator duties at the Backup Control Center (BCC) as needed during emergencies and drills.
- Participate in Regional System Blackstart restoration drills.
- Operate communications systems to coordinate with interconnected utilities and field personnel.
- Coordinate with internal and external levels to exchange information and ensure reliable operations.
- Maintain operational records and logs; post information on reliability messaging tools as required.
