JOBOPPORTUNITY
Under general supervision, provides nutrition counseling, education and consulting services to public health division staff, community health and welfare agencies and the public. Provides nutritional assessment and counseling, coordination of educational nutrition programs and demonstrations of food preparation for medical, community groups and the public.
The immediate 3/4 time vacancy is in the Women, Infant and Children’s Program (WIC) within the City’s Health & Human Services Department. The City of Berkeley’s WIC Program serves an extremely diverse population and has a large breastfeeding peer counselor program.
This classification is represented by SEIU Local 1021.
Minimum QualificationsEquivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, which satisfies the qualification requirement for Dietetic Registration and two (2) years of experience as a nutritionist in a public health agency, such as a hospital or clinic, or as a nutrition instructor.
Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
A valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
A Master’s degree in nutrition is desirable.
Bilingual Spanish skills highly desirable.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess The Following- Principles and practices of nutrition, including menu planning and food preparation methods;
- Principles of maternal and child nutrition, including breastfeeding;
- Principles and practices of nutrition education and counseling;
- Applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations;
- community social service support services and agencies.
- Perform nutrition assessments, determine nutritional requirements and provide client counseling;
- Work with a wide variety of socio-economic and ethnic groups;
- Review and recommend improved menu plans;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional programs and food services;
- Conduct effective nutritional workshops and other educational programs;
- Prepare clear, concise and complete reports and other written correspondence;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work;
- and maintain accurate records of work performed.
